Skills Development Program
Let us continue to assist in “bridging the communication gap!” Providing interpreting services since 1994.
Bridge Interpreting’s Skills Development Program is an unpaid, intensive ASL Interpreting internship providing experience in community-based interpreting. Participants will experience real-life interpreting in a wide-variety of settings. Participants will be expected to follow all applicable federal and state laws, while always abiding by the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in professional development workshops. In addition, program participants will have numerous networking opportunities with professionals in the field of interpreting, as well as other professions. We also offer a different perspective on interpreting services. As part of the Independent Living (IL) Philosophy, we believe that services should be consumer driven, meaning the consumer has the right to request services that best meet their needs as they see them. Our program also allows the intern to learn the business side of interpreting agencies by assisting in scheduling and seeing how an agency runs. Finally, as part of a Center for Independent Living (CIL), we have the unique ability to provide the opportunity to shadow a Deaf Community Independent Living Specialist, who can act as a sign language model.
An internship is one of the best ways to gain real life career experience before stepping into the professional realm. Under the guidance of mentors, an intern has the opportunity to grow and develop their personal and professional skills. Interns are also provided an opportunity to see if the world they are exploring is a good fit for them.
Interpreting is no different. Internships in the interpreting field provide an intern with invaluable real life experience on top of professional connections throughout the interpreting and Deaf communities. Through dedication and focus, much can be achieved. Bridge Interpreting is focused on providing a quality learning experience for all participants in our Skills Development Program. We believe in putting out best foot forward to meet the needs of all of those with whom we work.
See what some of our previous interns have said about Bridge Interpreting’s Skills Development Program:
“Through preparation, encouragement, and supportive staff, Bridge Interpreting allowed me to advance as a professional interpreter. I wouldn’t be certified and licensed without all the hard work and motivation. As I have been told: reaching a goal is never easy, but if you put your mind and heart to it, you can do it.” – Heidi Henke, Professional Sign Language Interpreter
